Greatness in the pigeon sport can be measured against one criterion only.
Numerous fancier's opinion is that he is one of the greatest fanciers this country ever seen.
His pigeons are legendary and are performing brilliantly for hundreds of fanciers in South Africa and Namibia.
Vic Furstenburg truly mastered the art of breeding champion racers and producers.
Greatness is an understatement to describe the fancier, whom many other fanciers refer to as the "Legend" No wonder that the late legendary Pieter Schoeman(senior) when asked to pick South Africa's best pigeon fanciers of all time, named him one of the first members of that team. His Pigeons turned numerous average fanciers into champions and numerous champions into legends.
When you take his pigeons into your hand you will know that they are special. These pigeons dominated pigeon racing on the West Coast and Northern Cape for a very long time. These pigeons complimented any family of pigeons ever crossed with. The family became unbeatable.
The Furstenburg family is without a doubt South Africa's equivalent of the Jansen Brothers of Belgium.
Most pigeon fanciers have bred racing pigeons for 30-40 years without ever producing a champion racer or producer. Uncle Vic bred to may to mention. This is the class of the fanciers whom many refer to as " The Legend ". He bred better from the best. After 40 years of intense line and inbreeding, they are better today than they were 40 years ago and are still outperforming any other family today.
At his age of 82 Uncle Vic is still a force to be reckoned with. Andre Carelsen, visited Uncle Vic in 2005 and his comment was: "His pigeons must be of superior quality"
Uncle Vic, your friends, the pigeon fraternity of South Africa and all the champions who are champions today because of you, we all salute you for the true legend that you are!
We wish you and your family a Merry Christmas, a happy New Year and a terrific 2014.
